Turf laying Penrith

Landscaping Penrith takes turf laying jobs across the Penrith area: new lawns, returfing and artificial turf. A local landscaper we work with visits, checks the soil, the levels and where water sits after rain, and prepares the ground before any turf goes down. You get a clear price and what's included, agreed before any work starts.

What sets the price of new turf

The landscaper prices your turf at the site visit, from what they see in the yard:

  • The area in square metres, and the turf you choose
  • How much old lawn, weeds or rubble has to come out and be taken away
  • How much levelling the ground needs, and how much turf underlay or soil comes in
  • Drainage, where water sits after rain
  • Whether soil and turf can go through the side gate by barrow, or need a machine

Turf farm prices online are usually for the turf alone. The landscaper's price also covers preparing the ground and laying it.

Turf on a Penrith block

Under much of Penrith is a heavy shale clay. It takes in water slowly, stays wet for days after a storm and sets hard in a dry spell. Turf rolled straight onto it, or onto the compacted ground a builder leaves, can take at first and then thin out. So the landscaper breaks up the surface, takes out rubble, spreads turf underlay and shapes a gentle fall away from the house, so storm water runs off instead of pooling at the back door.

Older suburbs

Kingswood and South Penrith

Returfing usually starts with stripping the old lawn and weeds, then filling the dips so the new lawn sits level with the paths and edges.

New estates

Jordan Springs and Caddens

The topsoil is often gone, and half bricks and concrete sit just under the surface. They come out before the underlay goes in. Your estate's guidelines may also set what goes in the front yard; see Garden design.

The foothills

Leonay and Emu Heights

On a steep bank, rain runs off before it soaks in and a mower is hard to push. A flat lawn terrace held by a low wall can be the better job; see Retaining walls.

Acreage

Mulgoa and Orchard Hills

A big lawn usually means preparing the ground with a machine and planning how to water the whole area while it settles in.

Which turf for your yard

Buffalo, couch and kikuyu are the usual lawns in western Sydney. Buffalo, such as Sir Walter, has a broad, soft leaf and copes best with part shade. Couch and kikuyu want full sun and grow back faster where kids and dogs wear the lawn down; kikuyu also needs mowing more often and spreads into garden beds. The landscaper suggests one for your sun, shade and use at the site visit.

Watering new turf

For the first 28 days, Sydney Water's Water Wise Guidelines let you water new turf at any time of day. After that the everyday rule applies: water before 10 am or after 4 pm. Once the lawn has settled in, regular mowing is covered on Lawn mowing and garden maintenance.

Artificial turf

Landscaping Penrith also takes artificial turf jobs: a side yard, a shaded corner where real grass won't grow, or a small back yard that's hard to mow. Artificial turf, or artificial grass, goes down on a compacted crushed-rock base, not straight onto the clay, and the base is shaped so rain drains through the backing and away from the house.

Two things to check before you choose it:

  • In full sun it gets very hot (see the questions below).
  • Some estates limit it. Jordan Springs' Eastern Precinct guide, for example, doesn't allow artificial turf where it can be seen from the street.

What happens after you ask

  1. Send your suburb, the job and a rough size of the lawn. A photo helps. You hear back within 48 hours.
  2. A local landscaper calls to book a visit. On site they measure the area and check the soil, the levels, where water sits after rain and the side access.
  3. You get a clear price and what's included, agreed before any work starts, and a time frame once they've seen the job.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to level and turf a backyard in Penrith?

As a rough guide, about $17 to $46 a square metre for turf supplied and laid (What's The Damage?, Sydney, October 2026); turf farm prices are for the turf alone. These are published guide figures, not a quote for your job. The area, the turf you choose, how much levelling and underlay the ground needs, and how much old lawn or rubble comes out set your price, and the landscaper agrees it with you at the site visit, before any work starts.

Does artificial grass get too hot in summer?

It can, in full sun. Western Sydney University's Dr Sebastian Pfautsch has said unshaded artificial turf can reach up to 100 °C on a hot day, hot enough to burn skin, especially a toddler's. If kids or dogs use that part of the yard in the afternoon, lay it where there's shade, or keep real turf in the sunny spots.

Do you take small turf jobs?

A turf strip beside the driveway or one patch of back lawn is worth a quote.

Does a turf layer need a licence in NSW?

Not for turf on its own. NSW's structural landscaping licence covers work such as retaining walls, paving, fencing, decks and pergolas worth more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST, and turf isn't on that list. If the job also includes a retaining wall or paving and is worth more than $5,000, the landscaper needs that licence.

How long does it take to lay turf?

The landscaper gives you a time frame after the site visit, once they've seen the area, the soil and the access.
